An interview with Erlend Hjelvik of Kvelertak

Not only have I been fortunate enough to experience Kvelertak, one of my favourite bands of 2011 live on two occasions, on Friday last week, prior to a stunning performance at The Roadhouse, I met with vocalist Erlend for a general chat and discovered some less than obvious influences around their gargantuan sound.

Kate Bush - 50 Words for Snow

So this is my take on the new Kate Bush album.  As you would expect, challenging, not the easiest of listens initially, but perseverence is the watch word.

Tom Williams and the Boat - Pledge Campaign

One of my bands of the year, and all round good guys Tom Williams and the Boat release their second album through the Pledge Campaign, a percentage of which also goes to The Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Trust.

Head over to their page now and pledge away.  Having heard some of the new songs live earlier this year, I can assure you it will be well worth it.

And here's the interview we did with Tom earlier this year and link to the fantastic "See My Evil" from debut album "Too Slow."

Black Sabbath reunite with the original line-up.

I really do approach this with real trepidation.  As a massive fan of Black Sabbath, who only ever saw them with Ronnie James Dio on vocal duties, yes, the opportunity to see the original line up, obviously including Ozzy is tempting, but realistically, at their age, is this a good idea.   The chances of the memories of one of metals greatest and most influential bands being besmirched, seems to be much higher than a triumphant return.

Once again, only time will tell I guess but I've a feeling I'd prefer an image in my mind something like this:

U.K tour in February is a must attend for one of the U.K's best live bands.

Amplifier - One of Manchester's most underrated bands

If you missed Amplifier and their fantastic first two albums, here's a chance to play catch up.

With a sound that draws as much from post-rock’s  modernity as it does from the classic space rock grooves of the past, Amplifier’s resurgence into the music scene with 2011’s ‘The Octopus’ was not just a celebratory success story of sticking it to ‘the man’, but testament to the dogged determination that drives this unique Mancunian trio ever onwards. In the near 14 years of their existence, Amplifier have suffered from more than their fair share of the kind of pitfalls that the music industry can throw at a band, defiantly stuck two fingers up to the perceived manner of doing business and set about creating their own music for themselves and their fans. For an alternative band unafraid to toy with rock conventions, it was a steadfastly punk rock way of doing their own business.

  1. It’s two hours long, has sixteen tracks, none of them short and several very long, and took four years to make
  2. The Octopus was entirely self-funded and self-created
  3. AMPLIFIER are a three piece rock band from Manchester. THE OCTOPUS is their widely and wildly acclaimed third album.
