TAME IMPALA and POND NEW TRACK AND VIDEO

Tame Impala who are officially releasing "Elephant" the first track from forthcoming album  "Lonerism" on October 5th.

There's a real Queens of the Stone Age with glam strut sound to this, plus the pre-requisite psychedelic vibe. Play very loud.

Also on Modular Recordings, Pond, officially release their completely crazy video for "Moth Wings" filmed by the band themselves on iPhone.  Another stunning track taken from their "Beard, Wives, Denim" album.

TALANAS to Support MY DYING BRIDE on European tour

A further Talanas update reveals the band not only supporting My Dying Bride on their O2 Islington date in the capitol, instead, providing the main support throughout their European tour from London through to Frankfort. This, the first foray for the progressive death metal into Europe.

Again, incredible, but thoroughly deserved recognition for one of Britain's finest extreme outfits.

Could it become even better........yes, with your help. Click on the link below and join the Damnation forum, Talanas to be added to the festival line-up in November, alongside My Dying Bride. Surely an obvious choice?

EP REVIEW - SPIRES "LUCID ABSTRACTIONS"

A conversation I have on a very regular basis, the vagaries around the music business, when supremely talented talentede musicians can constantly produce incredible material, yet still go through life relatively unnoticed, especially compared to mainstream dross, which sells copious amounts of units.  A case in point here, Manchester Progressive Metallers Spires, self releasing their new E.P "Lucid Abstractions" this week as a 500 cd limited edition.

And worry not, none metal fans, this five track collection proves mellow, acoustic with clean vocals,  accessible by all, given half a chance.

SPIRES – LUCID ABSTRACTIONS LIMITED EDITION RELEASE – OUT NOW

AT LAST, THE ONE I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR.

LTD EDITION ACOUSTIC MINI ALBUM NOW RELEASED!

Absolutely phenomenal Mancunian Progressive Metallers SPIRES have officially released their new acoustic EP / mini album'Lucid Abstractions'

The record features four brand new tracks and an acoustic version of 'Spiral of Ascension', from their highly praised debut album of the same name. Featuring prominent use of female vocals, cello and piano, the EP is a collection of ethereal, dreamlike songs, yet retains the dark and foreboding sound of it's predecessor.

This release is limited to 500 copies on Digipack, and with many already snapped up through pre-orders is expected to sell quickly. There will also be a digital release on iTunes, Amazon MP3 etc in the coming weeks. The band are currently writing material for their second full length, which will be a step in the other direction, expected for release in early 2013.

'Lucid Abstractions' features artwork by Daniella Morrison who also did the artwork for 'Spiral...' and a guest vocal appearance from Talena Cuthbert of Gone Til Winter.

The band play Birmingham, Scruffy Murphys on August 25th.

TD EDITION ACOUSTIC MINI ALBUM NOW RELEASED!

Can't wait to hear this, although I am slightly disappointed Spires have moved away from the original artwork ;)

R.I.P JON LORD - One of the most influential of keyboardists

As an eleven year old kid, my main exposure to music had been via my parents relatively small music collection and Top of the Pops. The sheer exhilaration I felt on arriving at Comprehensive School, making new musically influenced friends and being introduced to Deep Purple, impossible to describe. "Never Before", had I experienced such an incredible sound, Blackmore's guitar, Gillans screaming vocals, the thunderous drunmming of Ian Paice, Roger Glover's strong bass lines and of course, Jon Lord's Hammond Organ adding an extra dimension to their blues based rock. Circa 1975 / 1976, never a day seemed to go by, someone wasn't walking around Saddleworth School with a copy of "Made in Japan," in a Golden Disc bag.

Deep Purple became,my band, the major rock influence of my formative years, they took me to places I could never have imagined without even leaving my room. I could have luck on Venus, always have a ball on Mars, be a Highway Star and Speed King in one fell swoop, even better if I felt Lazy, just stay in bed. I was literally a Child lost in Time, sonically surrounded by a quintet who became a major part of my life.

Bizarrely, since the start of the year, after the death of many legendary music figures, I'd thought on  numerous occasions, before long one of my absolute heroes will be next to part company with this earth and tonight I read that Jon Lord has passed away. It had to happen at some stage, but I still feel genuinely gutted, a strange feeling for someone I've never met.

RI.P Jon, you were and always will be a hero to me and many others, and wherever you are now, just remember one thing, "YOU WANT EVERYTHING LOUDER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE."

EXTREME NOISE, AND TERROR AT DAMNATION FESTIVAL

AUSTRIAN death metal machine BELPHEGOR will play their only UK show of 2012 at Damnation Festival, performing the most brutal tracks from their new album.

The demonic group head up an unforgiving announcement for this year's Terrorizer Stage with crust punk pioneers
EXTREME NOISE TERROR and English black metallers WODENSTHRONE also joining the stage which already boasts a headline billing for Pig Destroyer and a return to UK soil for Aura Noir.

Meanwhile, progressive hardcore group
DEVIL SOLD HIS SOUL will take to the Jagermeister Stage, also with a new album to showcase.

Belphegor's Helmuth said: "We are looking forward to shredding the mighty land of NWOBHM, again.

"It's always a pleasure and an intense ritualistic raid experience to bring our chaos sound to the UK.

"Hail Damnation! Hail Death!"

Wodensthrone guitarist/vocalist Rædwalh said: "Wodensthrone are very pleased to have been invited to play Damnation Festival; an event that we have seen grow from its inception in Manchester to one of the UK's premier metal events.

"I fondly remember the early incarnations of the festival, so to see it grow to its current status is very encouraging.

The already-confirmed lineup is extremely promising and for ourselves to be included in it is a humbling testament to this band's perseverance.

"With our second album, Curse, now out on Candlelight Records, we are proudly raising the banner of UK Black Metal in 2012 and to be able to cap off a busy year with a Damnation appearance is an honour. Wæs thu hæl!"

Devil Sold His Soul added: "We last played Damnation Festival back in 2008. It was hot, sweaty, loud and heavy and we loved every minute of it.

"We always enjoy playing in Leeds and the line-up this year looks incredible. We'll have a new album out by then and can't wait to play these new longs live - Bring it on Damnation."

Announced so far for Damnation Festival 2012 is: Electric Wizard, My Dying Bride, Pig Destroyer, Belphegor, Primordial, Extreme Noise Terror, Textures, Devil Sold His Soul, Aura Noir, Gama Bomb, 40 Watt Sun and Wodensthrone.

Tickets priced £32 are available from

Album review - THE HIGH COMMISSIONERS - "Studies"

Although stimulated initially by an acoustic version of "Maybe You're Wrong" via Youtube, to completely appreciate the glorious nature of The High Commissioners, requires the full electric majesty offered through the debut album "Studies."  Listen no futher than opening track "Sleep When You're Dead," throbbing bass intro, rich soulful gravelly vocals and chiming guitars preclude three minutes of blues infused riffs, licks, drops and breakdowns. It's said, blues can't just be played, it has to be felt, the Anglo French four piece proving exactly that, the authenticity of "All Day Long' " evoking sweat drenched images of Mississippi Delta swamps, rather than North London or Paris .

Although pursuing a traditional path, 60' and 70's influences apparent, The High Commissioners carve a thoroughly modern edge into their psychedelic musings, admittedly on occasion perhaps becoming overtly whimsical in nature, Will Hanley's stunning vocal range working best without ethereal effects, band providing raw, unfettered encouragement. "Maybe You're Wrong," a prime example, Hanley's delivery, while not reaching the depths of a Mark Lanegan, certainly sitting within Jamie N Commons territory, providing a similar, "Where the hell did that come from" effect, based on youthful apperance.

It would appear the quartet split their time between the South of England and Northern France although blues music this pure and visceral designed to be played live, completely apt for travels far and wide. Surely The High Commissioners will soon establish an ever widening audience.

Incredibly, "Studies" is available as completely free download at the bands website, a mere click away. Hit the link below now and enter Tne High Commissioners sonically beguiling world .

Album Review - HEAVEN'S JAIL BAND - "Angelmaker"

With debut full length "Angelmaker," Heaven's Jail Band provide an abject lesson in taking the country rock outline defined by a Big Star, Neil Young, Tom Petty, early Eagles etc, while delivering a darker, sleazier journey through America's underbelly, offering both a riveting and slightly disturbing listen.  Utilising both raw musical and lyrical edge, they sit contrastingly at odds alongside Francesco Ferorelli's placid, calm vocal delivery, giving an opening line like "My footsteps on the gravel, sound like crunching little skulls" an even more sinister edge.

Songs throughout utilise spacious chord structures, traditional lead and trundling distorted rhythm sitting side by side, although more claustrophobic elements infiltrate, both guitars exploiting tighter, complex patterns, intermingling whilst fighting for supremacy as “Sleep Outside” closes or throughout “Speak Lovely Chaos” the  album’s broodingly ominous highlight.

My only (miniscule) criticism, on occasions after a soundscape of guitar soloing bliss becomes established, aforementioned “Chaos” or “Trees Like Trees” are subsequently brought abruptly to a close. While not suggesting an epic wig out of “Freebird” or “Green Grass and Hide Tides” proportions, extension by thirty seconds or even a minute of additional six string interplay appears an opportunity squandered. Perhaps live, more elongated versions may transpire.

The music of Heavens Jail Band doesn't fit an America of rhinestones, spotless wide brimmed stetsons or gilt edged stars on pavements, instead suiting grubby motels, trailer parks and Brooklyn back alleys. Tough and uncompromising, exactly as it should be.

"Angelmaker" can be streamed and downloaded from the Heaven's Jail Band bandcamp page.

THE HIGH COMMISSIONERS

It's a genuine thrill when a great band literally drops in your lap, exactly that scenario taking place this evening, The High Commissioners suddenly appearing, following me on Twitter.

A quick search on YouTube reveals the Anglo / French, London based quartet of Will, Domenico, Fecundo and Felix produce a raw, almost swamp blues sound, revolving around sophisticated guitar interplay with drawled earthy vocals, (imagine a cool James Morrison,)  tangentially disappearing on occasions down more psychedelic Cream like avenues. It's a heady mix, well worthy of exploration at their webite  http://highlycommissioned.co.uk/music.html, where the debut album "STUDIES" is also available for free download.

5th August - The Porter - Bath

Thurston Moore's CHELSEA LIGHT MOVING release 2nd track.

CHELSEA LIGHT MOVING, the new project from Thurston Moore with Keith Wood (Guitar), Samara Lubelski (Bass) and John Moloney (Drums) releas a second track "Groovy and Linda." Predominantly a slower tempo affair, compared to first outing "Burroughs" it still maintains a very Sonic Youthesque sound, all chugging guitars and heavy distortion.

The subject matter revolves around late 60's hippy ideals coming to a disastous and murderous end in New York's East Village within a hail of bullets, Moore's frantic cries of "Don't Shoot" prior to a blood curdling scream, bring a dense piece of psychdelic blues to a blistering close.

Much to admire from Chelsea Light Moving and plenty more to be foisted upon us.

BO NINGEN - NEW ALBUM "LINE THE WALL" RELEASED IN OCTOBER

Back in 2010, I happened upon a band on Marc Riley's 6 Music show, who literally erupted from my speakers, carrying me away to a parrellel Universe inhabited by Japanese banshees swathed within a sonic maelstrom of psychedelic noise and pulversing rhythms, completely blurring my perception of music.  The eponymously titled Bo Ningen debut album ruled my life for months, listening became the aural equivalent of watching The Ring on fast forward, thrilling, even slightly terrifying, the sheer power and intensity breathtaking in it's magnitude.

Not content to maintain this deranged magnificence inherently mine, I wilfully thrust videos and links upon anyone who cared listen to my deranged rantings, particularly my iTunes Ping Pals , desperate to inflict the immaculate sprawling, chaotic opus upon as many as humanly possible.

And now, two years later, the opportunity will arise again, as Bo Ningen unleash new album  "Line The Wall" scheduled for release on October 8th on a slighly more suspecting public, taking the new material for their first headline tour of the U.K during the same month.  A three month wait cruel in the extreme, but such is the nature of releases and hopefully a track or two will make an appearance prior to the proposed date, allowing time to digest fully, before immersing in the live vortex of Manchester's Ruby Lounge on October 17th.

Undoubtedly, see you down the front.

BLIND ATLAS - THESE DAYS

In relation to previous Blind Atlas videos, "These Days" may be very different, but still proves an outstanding piece of work, in this case utilising the skills of Into Productions.

It's a beautifully lamenting piece of country infused rock taken from their debut album "Kodiak Bear", with additional poignancy for me, filmed very close to home in the hills above Saddleworth.

The album, destined for my top ten of the year, can be purchased direct from the Blind Atlas Bandcamp page. http://blindatlas.bandcamp.com/

"For their seventh album, Bend Beyond, Woods got dark. It’s not that they weren’t dark before—when you really get in there and listen, Jeremy Earl is singing about some heavy stuff, but it’s hidden under his gorgeous falsetto and sometimes obtuse lyrics. On Bend Beyond, though, Earl and company fully embrace that darkness.
Album opener “Bend Beyond,” has long been a jammy live staple, but here it’s compact and tight with a stuttered guitar line and a world-ending collision of instruments. Meanwhile “Is It Honest” jangles along happily until you notice Earl is in a more destructive zone than the bright music initially suggests, singing It’s so f***ing hard to see as both a form of comfort and an act of despair.
Instrumentally, Bend Beyond is certainly the most full Woods record yet, guitars weave and bubble across peppy drumming, but lyrically Earl is at his most direct and spare. While previous albums sounded like they went directly from Earl’s brain to tape with minimal outside interference, Bend Beyond is lush and full-bodied, the work of a band in perfect, heavy harmony.

Primordial, Textures & Bossk confirmed for Damnation Festival

IRISH pagan metal masters PRIMORDIAL will return to UK soil for an exclusive appearance at Damnation Festival.

They will be joined at the three-stage metal behemoth in Leeds by the much anticipated return of BOSSK and Dutch tech purveyors TEXTURES.

The latest additions bolster a bill which already boasts Electric Wizard, My Dying Bride, Pig Destroyer, Aura Noir, Gama Bomb and 40 Watt Sun for the eighth annual event, taking place at Leeds University Union on Saturday, November 3, 2012.

Commenting on their return to England, Primordial vocalist Alan Averill said: "Finally we are confirmed for Damnation Festival this year.
"After several years in the wilderness and not playing in the UK it really feels over the last few years we have reconnected with playing in the UK.
"This is the place we cut our teeth after all, way back in the mists of time. It feels like payback. See you all at Damnation!"

Textures' Jochem Jacobs added: "We are really excited to play at Damnation Festival - and since it's not open air the roof will come down with a million tons of metal!"

And post-sludge stalwarts Bossk are looking forward to riff-filled day of Damnation.
The band said: "All of us are very excited to be part of this years Damnation Festival!
"It's been a long time since we played in Leeds, and this will be the first time we play there since reforming.
"We are gonna rent more lights, bring more smoke, and more riffs for this show.
"It will be the first time we play the new track Pick Up Artist live. Watch Electric Wizard and follow the smoke to the riff filled land."

Tickets priced £32 are available from http://www.leedstickets.com and via the official Damnation Festival site and Facebook through Ticketscript: http://www.damnationfestival.co.uk/tickets and at Crash and Jumbo store in Leeds.
